I did use Arch Linux briefly… I don’t remember the exact reason I stopped using it.

I vaguely recall that it would probably benefit from a larger developer base. In particular, a number of applications I used weren’t available in the base repositories, which meant moving on to the AUP.

I may as well reinstall it in a virtual machine to see how it’s changed in the last year or two, though.

Have you taken a look at Arch Linux? There's quite a bit of initial setup, but you get a fast (i686) binary distro with a rolling release system and a lot of elegance.

It's noticeably zippier than Ubuntu, but not to the point of as much work as Gentoo takes. I like it a lot.

Well, there is similar functionality, I guess. But basically, it's still the same things I mentioned in the article. On Debian-based systems you can use debfoster to produce a similar effect, and newer Ubuntu systems or even Debian might have better functionality in this regard--I haven't tried. Also, aptitude can keep track of this kind of thing.

With Arch Linux, I think you have to use a special option to remove unused dependencies when you uninstall a package. If you later want to "clean out" like depclean does, you have to get a list of orphans from pacman and remove them by hand or script or whatever. It's doable, but depclean is still simpler.

I haven't really used any Red Hat system enough to know what the various options are.

Nice article.
I woud like to switch from Gentoo to another distro(Gentoo its so time consuming), but there're some things in Gentoo, that I can't live without:). For example: is there something like emerge --depclean in other distros. I can't find anything good enough.

well yeah u gotta hand it to AMD they were great from 2001-2007 and i agree, a little bit of marketing compitition makes they whole fire bigger and bigger. AMD have really dissapointed me this year and i guess the same for others, i think theyre problem is that they trusted us to remain loyal and thought that they could hang on to 90nm for just a bit longer, people have to understand that a little green chip company will always be a little green chip making company who in the broader aspect of things dident stand a chance aganist a giant like INTEL. also buying ATI was an overconfident mistake, Another thing Intel are free to do as they wish in the production of theyre chips because they have theyre own FABS (and r putting up more for 32nm), but NVIDIA and AMD-ATI have to rely on (usually expensive) FAB loaners which are currently a strict 90nm because of expense, In my opinion AMD and ATI need to rethink theyre entire approach towards intel afterall (now heres a shocking bit of info) If intel lost the processor war it would only affect 11%!!!! of theyre profits LOL!!

I had mentioned Opera briefly, but my failure to properly close some tags meant it disappeared into oblivion. I've fixed that problem now. Thanks for helping me to notice!

Aside from that, though, I just can't bring myself to actually use Opera. Maybe I'll give it another try here if I think about it, but it'd be nice to know what kind of features it has that you won't find in Firefox, which is my current browser.
